TWENTY

Evie

She slid up to me like a purring cat with sharpened claws ready to strike. I knew who and what she was. I wasn’t sure if she knew that I was from team green and not just a mere human.

“Are you Ben’s latest?” she asked, looking me up and down then wrinkling her nose with a hint of displeasure.

“And you are?” I asked, as if I didn’t already know. I was hopeless at playing mean and nasty.

“Mel Brooking, defense lawyer.” She held out her hand for me to shake and I was quick to remember that the venom in her fangs was lethal. “Pleasure to meet a friend of Ben’s. We go a long way back. Is he here, by the way?”

“He’s with Levi.”

She looked me up and down again. What’s her problem?

“You’re very tall,” she said. “But not model thin, curvy. I see his tastes have changed.”

Where had Mrs. McKenzie gone? I spotted her talking to Laura, Ben’s sister. Laura then saw me and Mel Brooking standing at a table together and her attention switched to us. I’m guessing by her smirk that she’s no ally of mine. I scanned the room that was now packed with people, trying to decipher who was green and who was grey. The truth was I had no idea.

My skin was crawling madly, the tips of my fingers were numb, and a ball of fire in my stomach kept harassing me. Without a doubt there were greys and greens in the room. I just failed to identify who was who, apart from the woman in front of me.

“Can I get you a drink?” she asked, raising her voice to be heard over the laughter and boisterous chatter surrounding us.

“I have one.” I was surprised to find that my glass was empty. I was so nervous, I drank it all. Alcohol hinders magic, I can’t drink anymore. “No thanks.”

“Can I have a little word with you in private? I’d rather no one here heard what I have to say,” she said.

“Is it about Ben?” I asked.

“I have information that may be of interest to you,” she said.

“I’m not interested in Ben’s past girlfriends,” I said.

She laughed wickedly. I tried to see her fangs while her mouth was open, but they were well hidden. “Sure, you’re not. But that’s not why I want to talk to you.”

It would be deemed madness to go to a secluded place with a known vampire killer alone, absolute stupidity.

“Okay,” I said. What the heck was I thinking? My body was so twisted in knots and thorns from everyone’s emotions that I didn’t know what was up and what was down.

“Come this way,” she said, and I followed her out of the bar area to the hall outside. Then she opened a door into an unused locker room and checked every shower and toilet stall to make sure we were alone.

“Now, you listen to me,” she said, grabbing me by the arm to pull me down onto the bench. Her grip was tight and I yelped in pain.
